Who Designed This Writing Pad?

Meet artist Emily May. Best known by her alter ego ‘The Nonsense Maker’, she lives rogue in a world ruled by pure imagination. By day you can spot her caffeine fuelled and roaming the inner lane ways of Melbourne, by night she explores secret passageways winding to worlds only accessible in dreams. From these worlds she conjures her images, captured where dreaming meets reality and the nonsensical is in limitless bloom.

Some Writing Pad FAQs

Artist Emily May loves colours, almost as much as she loves books!

Here at The Nonsense Maker we believe in creating products that aren't just beautiful, but are also practical. This writing pad is designed to bring a little magic into the everyday, and make otherwise mundane tasks a little more fun!

Emily May's illustrations are generally inspired by old-world whimsy and vintage storybooks. Emily creates her playful, nostalgic pieces by blending her imaginary world with the modern day.

A writing pad is for the thoughts that need to exist somewhere outside your head. The to-do list, the drafts, the ideas that arrive while your busy multitasking.

It is also perfect for slower things, like a letter to a friend, or your morning wonderings. Anything that benefits from putting pen to paper.

The beauty of a writing pad is it is wonderfully non-committal. It invites use without preciousness - you write, you tear off, you move on. It's for getting ideas out of your head.

Our book themed writing pad is A5, with a whimsical hand-illustrated design on every page, so it also bring a little bit of joy to your desk!

The main difference between a writing pad and a notebook is commitment.

A notebook is for keeping. You fill it with thoughts you would like to keep with you. The binding is permanent, and the cover is often beautiful.

A writing pad is for using. Pages are made to be torn off, passed on, pinned up, or thrown away. For everyday note-taking, to-do lists, shopping lists, drafting, and the general business of making nonsense, a writing pad is a wonderfully practical tool.

Lefties love a writing pad - just ask one!

One all too familiar pain point for most left-handed people is that a spiral-bound, or side-bound notebook puts a ridge directly under your wrist where your hand needs to rest, which gets uncomfortable quickly. A top-bound writing pad is the solution! The spine sits above the page and entirely out of the way.

Our A5 writing pad is top-bound and works well for both hands.

A good teacher gift is something useful that also feels considered. Something that acknowledges that teaching involves a significant amount of thinking, drafting, and scribbling.

A writing pad sits at a peculiar intersection of genuinely practical, but with enough personality to feel like a gift rather than an office supply. This design has a hand-illustrated book theme on every page, perfect for teachers who love pretty things!
